Free Things to Do on Grand Cayman
Here are several suggestions from the Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits team that will help you enjoy the Island’s immense beauty and culture for free:
Sun & Sand Lovers – Any time at the beach on Grand Cayman is time well spent! All of the beaches are public up to the high-water mark, including those directly in front of resorts. So, grab your towels, chairs and snorkel gear, watch for “Public Access” signs along the road, park, and follow the paths to some hidden gems, including:
- Seven Mile Public Beach – Seven Mile Beach is one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, and is home to the majority of the Island’s luxury resorts and hotels. “Public Beach” is a popular, wide section of it that is located next to Calico Jack’s beach bar on West Bay Road. It offers cabanas, restrooms and showers, and has been extended to include a park with shade trees and a children’s playground.
- Cemetery Beach – Located at the north end of Seven Mile Beach, you will find Cemetery Beach, named for the neighboring cemetery. Enjoy lots of shade, ample parking, and the best snorkeling on Seven Mile Beach.
- Spotts Beach – Discover this peaceful beach in the Spotts Newlands part of Grand Cayman, where waterfront homes and condos surround ironshore cliffs and white sand. It’s famous for the green sea turtles that swim through the shallow water to feed on sea grass in the late afternoon. Bring a snorkel and mask to enjoy them. There are benches and tables available for picnics and barbecues, and the beach is a great place to watch the sunset.
History Buffs – George Town is the capital of the Cayman Islands. If you’re interested in history and heritage, do a self-guided walking tour of the city and check out the walls and cannons that remain at Fort George, the 1790 fortress built to protect the port from attacks by Spanish marauders and pirates, and other interesting landmarks.
Art Lovers – If you love art and culture, a visit to the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is a must. They have a high-quality permanent collection of unique Caymanian artworks from the nation’s most prominent artists, as well as visiting exhibitions. You can also visit their floral gardens, small sculpture garden, and enjoy a snack or beverage in the Art Café. The National Gallery is closed on Sundays.
Nature Lovers – Grand Cayman’s highest point is only 79 feet above sea level, so you won’t find mountains to climb, but the historic Mastic Trail in Frank Sound offers nature lovers stunning scenery, including black mangroves, two-million year old untouched forest, local birds and wildlife. Self-guided leaflets for the satisfying four-mile round-trip hike are available from the National Trust’s visitor center. (Paid tours are also available.)
