Are you planning a visit to the Grand Cayman and wondering when to go? The Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits staff can help you decide what time of year to visit and has some tips for unique things to do while you’re here.
Grand Cayman in Winter (November – April)
Winter on Grand Cayman, also known as “high season” or “dry season,” is the most popular time for people to visit, primarily because they are escaping cold, cruel winter weather at home. If you love dry weather with low humidity, visit our tropical paradise in February, March or April. We have lots of sunshine, little rain, and refreshing sea breezes in winter, with average high temperatures from 75°-86°F; average lows of 68°-72°F; and water temperatures between 78° and 82°F.
Grand Cayman in Summer (May – October)
The hottest months on Grand Cayman are August, when highs hover around 89°F, followed by July and then September. During the summer, also known as the “off season” or “wet season,” you’ll experience the most rain in May and June and again in September and October, but air and water temperatures are warmer. Our crystal clear, calm seas are ideal for diving, snorkeling, sailing and fishing in summer, and you’ll appreciate fewer crowds and lower hotel prices.
Hurricane Season (June – November)
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 1 in the Atlantic, but it’s unlikely that you will experience a hurricane on Grand Cayman. The Cayman Islands are far enough west that most storms passing through the Caribbean Sea turn northward before they reach us. However, the water can be choppy, particularly in August and September, so take this into consideration if you plan to snorkel and scuba dive.
Off the Beaten Path Things to Do
Kittiwake Shipwreck & Underwater Museum
Dive or snorkel on the wreck of the USS Kittiwake, a 251-foot-long former submarine support ship that was sunk in 2011 to serve as an artificial reef. It is Grand Cayman’s biggest shipwreck and a haven for 50 species of coral and more than 500 species of fish. It can be enjoyed by all skill levels of snorkelers and scuba divers.
If you have time for an after-dark adventure, consider a kayaking tour of Grand Cayman’s Bioluminescent Bay. The magical phenomenon, which causes the sea to glow during the darkest nights, is created by tiny single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates that emit light as they move in the water. Be sure to book in advance because the bioluminescent schedule follows the moon cycle.
A geologic wonder, this attraction is situated in a lush tropical forest in North Side, Grand Cayman. The caves took millions of years to form as seawater erosion created caverns filled with stalagmites, stalactites, crystal-like mineral deposits, and a gorgeous interior lake. Once a hideout for pirates, you can now tour three of them daily (except Good Friday and Christmas Day).
