How Much Wine Do You Need?

At many weddings, there is a cocktail reception between the ceremony and main reception during which guests can mingle and enjoy appetizers and beverages. If you plan to serve wine immediately following the ceremony and throughout the reception, be sure to take this into consideration when deciding how much wine to purchase.

It’s quite common to serve 1/3 beer, 1/3 liquor, and 1/3 wine, plus sparkling wine or champagne. Estimate one drink per guest per hour. For example, if you will have 150 guests and your festivities will last about 6 hours, each guest will need 6 drinks. Those numbers equate to a total of 900 drinks. If 1/3 of the guests are drinking wine, you would need 300 glasses of wine.

A standard wine bottle holds 25 ounces, which is roughly four or five glasses. Your 300 glasses of wine would require 60 to 75 bottles. If you estimate four servings per bottle, you will have a buffer in the event there is higher than expected consumption.

How Many Choices Should Your Guests Have?

One popular option is to offer two whites and two reds for your guests to choose from. This can be especially helpful is you will be serving wine between your ceremony and the main reception. This is the perfect time to serve a lighter wine to pair with appetizers and avoid making guests feel too sleepy or intoxicated before dinner is served.

For white wines, we recommend choosing one crisp, dry white, such as a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, and one sweeter white, such as a Rose or Riesling.

  • Chardonnay – Chardonnay is the world’s most famous white wine grape. It has buttery aromas and spicy notes and pairs well with seafood, chicken, or pork. Try Au Contraire Chardonnay from California’s Russian River Valley.
  • Pinot Grigio – This fine white wine has crisp, light, fruit flavors that pair well with seafood, chicken, pasta, and vegetarian dishes. Try Ruffino Lumina Pinot Grigio from Italy.
  • Riesling – Rieslings are among the finest light, fruity wines in the world. Try Becker Pfalz Riesling from Pfalz, Germany. The wine pairs well with chicken, seafood, Asian foods, beef, pork, and veal.
  • Rosé – Rosé wines are dry wines that are made from a wide variety of grapes, and they come in shades of pink. They are versatile with many different types of food. Try the La Vieille Ferme Rosé from Rhone, France.
  • Sauvignon Blanc – One of the driest, crispest white wines, Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with everything from salads to seafood. Try the award-winning Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Marlborough region.
